Colin told Hollis that he was going to go camping, but in all reality, he went to go meet Lindsey in her secret hiding place. The Dark Cave. Lindsey went there because she knew that Colin would meet up with her, and they would be able to talk. In this cave, Colin told the long story of all the Katherine's and he had never told anybody this story ever. Surprisingly, Lindsey thought that the story was very interesting and just wanted to keep talking to him.
An Abundance of Katherines
Hassan and Katrina were officially over, and Colin and Lindsey started to become a "thing." This was going on for a while, and Lindsey was not even thinking of TOC anymore. She was not sad and was not even affected by the break up. She admitted to being attracted to him because she wanted to be able to say she had a boyfriend, not because she actually had feelings for him.
Lindsey Lee Wells and Colin. They started to become VERY good friends, and began to like each other a lot. Colin was very concerned because he only had a thing for Katherines. He was very confused that he was actually liking a Lindsey. He wanted to keep talking to her and always being with her. On the other hand, Lindsey had only dated Colin's, starting and continuing her streak with dating Colin's. First was TOC, and soon would be Colin, the theorem obsessed prodigy.
Since the break up from Lindsey Lee Wells and TOC happened, this let Lindsey be free. She was not sad at all, and she started to like Colin. Colin did not know how he felt about her, and they would soon learn more about each other along the way. Colin would meet up with her in the cave, Lindsey's hiding spot, and they would just talk. For hours and hours, they just talked.
In this chapter, Colin and Hassan went to go shoot a pig with TOC's dad. Along the way, Hassan got tired, so Colin and Hassan took a break while TOC's dad kept going. Colin accidentally shot a hornet's nest, resulting in them running for their lives. On the journey of them running, Hassan saw his girlfriend, Katrina, and TOC, Lindsey's boyfriend, naked in a cemetery making out and other stuff. Hassan broke up with Katrina, and TOC broke up with Lindsey.
Symbolism:
Lindsey Lee Wells: She is used a symbol for Colin's confusion. Colin only dates people named Katherine, so when he met Lindsey and went with her to her "secret" hideout, Colin got very confused because at that moment he liked her presence and talking to her. Hassan: He is used as a symbol for Colin's friendship and playfulness. Colin does not seem like a playful person, but when he around Hassan, you see the funny side of Colin. Colin only has one friend, and that is Hassan, this is most likely because people see Colin as a nerd, but Hassan and Colin are very similar, that they see each other as best friends. Theorem: This is a symbol for Colin's never giving up attitude. Colin will work on something until he is finished and once he puts his mind to something he will finish it until the end. In other words, you can describe Colin as hard working and determined. Shift in Mood:
The shift in mood in Chapter 13 of An Abundance of Katherines was from the time Colin was thinking about his Theorem and the heated conversation he had with Hassan. Hassan was ecstatic to tell Colin that he kissed Katrina, but Colin was not. Colin thought that he made a mistake and he went against all of his religious beliefs. On the other hand, Hassan got very mad that Colin was not happy for him. Hassan went through many years of listening to all of Colin's problems, so he finally had a story to tell and Colin did not pay him the respect Hassan was expecting. The shift in mood went from calm to anger. Hassan was excited to tell Colin, Colin did not respond, Hassan got angry, and in the end Hassan was apologizing to Colin for called TOC (The Other Colin), Colin instead of TOC. Author's Purpose-
The author John Green uses the symbol of the Theorem to show the readers how it is hard for Colin to act like a normal person. Because Colin is a prodigy, he is better with smart and academic things instead of social things. John Green has the Theorem play a big part in the novel to show that being a prodigy is an important factor in Colin's life. Colin being a prodigy might always get in the way of his relationships and romantic life. Point of View-
Colin: He thinks that Hassan wants to "date" Lindsey Lee Wells. Even though Hassan keeps saying that he doesn't Colin will still think that because they are alway hanging out. Colin thinks that it is stupid to hang out with the "cool" kids because he knew that he would never be cool. Hassan: He wants to bring Colin on adventures so that he will come out of his shell, have fun, and stop grieving and spending all his time on Katherine XIX. Suspense:
Suspense is shown in Chapter 10 of An Abundance of Katherines. The first time it was suspenseful was during the interviews at the factory. When they came across a 22 year old woman named Katherine. This acts as suspenseful because the readers would have though that Colin would end up liking and dating her, but the reader will never know unless they keep reading. Another suspenseful time was after the interviews, Hassan and Colin were driving, and Colin got out of the car to call Katherine XIX. The readers might have been suspenseful because Hassan did not allow Colin to call her. Colin eventually called her, and the phone was ringing. The readers did not know if Katherine would pick up, and then Colin left a message. After a while, she called Colin, and he picked up as soon as possible. |
